Tie Your Hair and Go To Bed, Church In The Morning
2018, wood, canvas, cotton, gesso,
& satin bonnets, 48" x 72" x 17"
The idea for this installation stemmed from a 2019 beauty article detailing how the creator of NiteCap, a white woman, came under criticism for her $98 satin lined cap that was inspired by "the rich history of hair wrapping".
For generations Black women have worn silk or satin scarves or bonnets to bed or slept on a satin or silk pillowcase to help retain moisture and to maintain our hairstyles. Satin and silk bonnets and scarves are mundane elements of life for many black/brown women, so much so that they are readily available at local beauty supply stores for as low as $5.
Thus, the idea of paying almost $100 for a bonnet is absurd to many in the black community.
This piece takes those $5 dollar beauty supply store bonnets and elevates them by displaying them as one would see in a store window.
The title is derived from a line delivered by the renowned singer, Whitney Houston, in her final role as the 2012 movie Sparkle. The line deeply resonates with generations of black and brown women and girls that ever had to get their hair done the night before church, or any special event, and the precautions we take to ensure the style survives till the next day.
